Some people are the invariable DIY enthusiasts who are used to looking for information in order to deal with common household problems on their own. Indeed, there are problems that can be resolved by simple methods, to enable people to get rid of hassles and restore the functioning of their plumbing systems.

Problems can occur in the fixtures, in the toilets, in the pipes, and it is good to attempt to do simple plumbing repairs which can turn to be much easier than some people would think.

Fixing the sinks and drains is the most common task that arises, and it is worth attempting to deal with it before calling a plumber. Besides time, that would also save money.

Drains which are clogged should be tackled immediately. Simple homemade drain cleaners can do a great job. Mixtures of baking soda and vinegar poured down the drain are powerful cleaners and uncloggers. After pouring in the two ingredients, the drain should be left for about three hours, after which it should be properly flushed with water. When there is no grease in the clogged drain, pouring in salt and baking soda followed by a good amount of boiling water is the solution; the drain should be left overnight until the mixture does the proper unclogging.

Repairing a dripping tap is another urgent task to be done, and one that can be done by the householders. If left to drip, the tap could lead to a hefty amount of water lost which will have to be paid for. The reason for dripping should be sought in the elements inside the tap. Inside there is a seal that holds back the water when the handle is in the off position. The seal is held by a washer pressed tightly on it. When the washer or the seal is not in order, that leads to dripping. The washer or the seal, or both, may have to be replaced.

Shower heads are another common area where problems can arise. There can be several plumbing problems with them. There can be leaks in the place where the shower head connects to the shower arm, or between the body of the shower head and the swivel ball. When there is a leak in the shower head connection to the shower arm, the arm should be unscrewed from the pipe. The threads should be cleaned and coated with joint compound, or plumbers’ joint tape should be wrapped around them. Then the shower head can be screwed back on, and then hand tightened. Any excess compound or tape should be removed.
